Festival Rap is Back!

Year in year out there’s another shonky RnB promoter announcing ten-act oz tour…  promises he just can’t keep! Hand-in-hand with these crooks is money hungry nostalgic  hip hop acts announcing tours that never come into fruition. With the added promotion of online petitions being promoted virally on Facebook about artistic content being “offensive” to women and/or past drug charges, it feels like Australia is a territory that get’s put in the too hard basket from many  international hip hop artist’s. This may seem the case but certainly isn't it. Sometimes you have just have to be a little open to cross-genre collaborations and look in different locations for you music fix. See there’s still big player’s present bringing rap music to our shores. That being the Boutique Festival Promoters.

Over the recent years Southbound has toured Joey Bada$$, Run The Jewels, The Roots and Collio. Listen Out has put up Schoolboy Q, Azealia Banks, Childish Gambino and Young Fathers. And St Jerome’s Laneway has proudly hosted El-P, Danny Brown and Earl Sweet, this year they fail not to disappoint! Below is the run down of the hip hop/rnb lineup you can be soulfully seduced by Valentines Day!

Vince Staples

• 22-year-old hip hop MC from Long Beach, California.

• According to Rollin Stone Mag ‘he’s the most exciting man in rap’.

• Piloting the “Future Bounce” genre in the hip hop game.

• Multi-genre bass player, producer and singer from Los Angeles, California.
• He’s the virtuoso behind Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly
• He a session musician for Erykah Badu, most noted for his work with producer Flying Lotus, and crossover thrash band Suicidal Tendencies aka pretty pretty much the most badass bassist on the planet!

 Become immersed in exquisite airbrush and aerosol designs, as Jerome Davenport delivers his most anticipated exhibition yet. The collection of thirty works will exhibit over two days in one of Perth’s yet to be appreciated exhibition spaces ‘Fridays Studio’. Located on Old Aberdeen Place in West Perth, with its white painted walls, the recycled brick building will be home to the aerosol artist’s seminal works as he approaches the forefront of his career.

“Water and Light share an intrinsic relationship - while they are formless in nature, they shape all our lives, and the challenge of capturing such a relationship in a single moment forms the basis of the collection.” Bypassing the Media's common conception of beauty, Jerome seeks to create a space where the symbiosis of light and water is allowed to capture the full potential of the female form, and the resulting beauty of such a moment forms this body of work. 

Working predominantly with aerosol Jerome Davenport is blurring the boundaries of graffiti, muralism and geometry with incredible colour and impact. Growing up in rural Western Australia, Davenport’s career blossomed after studying Live Theatre Production. It was during these studies he obtained the skills and techniques, which empower him to turn any medium into a canvas. Recently his work has been accepted into Australia’s most prestigious portraiture award, The Black Swan Prize, as well as the Archibald Prize and being featured on Channels 9’s The Block’s Matt and Kim to the rescue.

This is the first public event I have presented as According To Evie! As you can imagine this is a challenging yet exciting time for me. I look forward to seeing you on the night!
